Nawaka Village with Fire-walking Show

Nawaka Village with Fire-walking Show

Although many come to Fiji to do nothing but lie on the beach and take advantage of sunny weather, it is also a wonderful place to learn about another culture. Spend a few hours in Nawaka Village, and experience the famous island hospitality and the traditional way of life. You will travel in an air-conditioned coach to the village where you will be greeted in true Fijian style. The village warriors will meet you at the entrance to the village, local women will sing a vanua chant reserved strictly for special guests, and the children will garland their visitors with traditional flower leis. Take in a kava ceremony in the village hall and then join your guide for a tour on which a few may even have the chance to meet the Chief. Delve into the mysterious world of fire walking. There is no valid explanation why members of the tribe, have the unique skill to walk on white-hot stones without injury. Finally, you will be invited to take part in the local “Taralala” dance. After The entertainment, you make your way to Lautoka City for Shopping and then back to the pier.

Things to bring

Dress modestly when visiting a village. Men should not be barechested and women should wear slacks or a below-the-knee dress. Women should definitely not be in shorts or a bathing suit. Scanty clothing is disrespectful and might be construed as a moral reflection on the hosts. For women it would also send the wrong message to the village Lotharios. Another item to remember is that when entering a village, take off your hat.

Expectations: Expect a moderate amount of walking, 2-3 hours of walking each day. There will be time to rest on the coach and between attractions. To enjoy this tour, you should be prepared to walk slightly longer distances, climb stairs and tolerate periods of standing, for example on city walks, sightseeing stops or ship excursions. The daily pace and timing can fluctuate significantly between longer and shorter travel days, with additional activities possibly occurring in the early morning or evening. There may be some changes in altitude or temperatures.

Appropriate for: Most travelers beginning with those who are moderately fit, lead semi-active lives, are comfortable participating in long days of activities and expect some physical exertion without the use of a cane or walker mobility aid.
